NEW YORK (AP) — As host of “The Daily Show” from 1999 to 2015, Jon Stewart changed comedy — and arguably journalism, too — with sharp, satirical takes on politics and current events. Catching lightning again will be difficult — particularly at a time when late-night television is greatly diminished as a cultural force and others, some from Stewart's family tree, are now competitors. It can be even tougher when, as Salon critic Melanie McFarland put it, the current Jon Stewart is forced to compete with memories of the old Jon Stewart. “Jon Stewart totally changed the face of late-night,” says Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University. “There's something so 2010 about Jon Stewart now,” he says.

CNN —The White House denounced Fox News on Friday, blasting the right-wing network for “standing up on behalf of hate” after one of its hosts attacked the Jewish heritage of two CNN anchors over their coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. “Lying to insult the pain that families suffered in the Holocaust has absolutely no place in America. But Levin stood by his comments Thursday night while responding to CNN’s condemnation of his remarks. The White House in recent months has assumed an aggressive posture toward Fox News, calling out some of the extremist rhetoric that the network’s hosts have made. And earlier this week, the White House denounced the comments made by Watters, which Fox News has remained silent on.

CNN —America’s newsrooms are — yet again — being forced to confront a familiar and unrelenting evil. Police released multiple images of the alleged gunman, asking the public for help identifying him. News organizations usually resist airing images and even the names of the gunman who carry out sickening acts of violence. And, as a result, millions of Americans will become familiar with him, the unsettling pictures of another gun-wielding man seared into the national consciousness. CNN —Republicans are enraged that their safe space was punctured at the second GOP debate by a Univision anchor. After welcoming viewers in Spanish (the debate was simulcast on Univision), Calderón queried the Republicans through the night on weighty issues related to immigration, hate crimes, health care, and more. But unlike what is typical on Fox News, Calderón declined to frame her questions in a manner favorable for the Republican candidates. “The Univision anchor’s questions seem to come from the comments section of Salon and Vox,” talk radio host Buck Sexton said. “I think the Univision lady thinks she’s at a Democratic Debate,” Fox News commenter Tomi Lahren added.

It’s no accident that two prime-time hosts on Fox (Jesse Watters and Greg Gutfeld) cut their teeth doing comedy, of sorts. Part of the reason Gillis is such a phenomenon is clearly political. (The title of the special is a Trump quote.) The Spectator called his success a major turning point in the resurgence of comedy. He compares the pull of it to that of a person turning into a werewolf.

CNN —One of Fox News’ top hosts said that many of the world’s problems would be solved if women were to vanish from the planet. As surveillance video played showing a smash-and-grab that occurred over the weekend at a Los Angeles Nordstrom, Gutfeld went on a rant portraying women as soft on crime and effectively blaming the entire gender for supposed policies that would prevent such crimes from being committed. “What would happen if all the women took a ladies week off and they went to Venus … How many of these problems would still exist?” Gutfeld wondered aloud. “I know this is offensive to the judge because she thinks like a dude,” Gutfeld joked. Gutfeld is no stranger to controversy, having made a number of comments during his time at Fox News that have ignited significant backlash.

Fox News hosts fumed after former President Donald Trump was indicted again Tuesday. At one point, he said the feds had been "rummaging" through Melania Trump's "underwear drawer." Watters said: "This is the establishment terrified of Donald Trump's reelection because of all the money that's going to dry up and all the influence. Additionally, Watters called the latest indictment against Trump "legal mumbo jumbo" and said the 45-page document read like an "MSNBC script." Fox News is facing fresh backlash after one of its hosts made comments about concentration camp victims' work skills. Greg Gutfeld said that those in the work camps with skills survived during the Holocaust — a clear simplification. "Being skilled or useful did not spare them from the horrors of the gas chambers," the Auschwitz memorial said in response. Fox News is facing a slew of backlash after one of its primetime hosts suggested that Holocaust survivors who had work skills survived in concentration camps. "We should avoid such oversimplifications in talking about this complex tragic story," the Auschwitz Memorial concluded.

“Did you ever read ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’?” Mr. Gutfeld said. “Vik Frankl talks about how you had to survive in a concentration camp by having skills. You had to be useful. Utility kept you alive.”Ms. Tarlov did not address Mr. Gutfeld’s question directly, instead saying she was concerned about middle school children being taught what Florida had set in its new curriculum. A White House spokesman, Andrew Bates, released a statement on Tuesday condemning Fox News for broadcasting Mr. Gutfeld’s comments, calling them “a horrid, dangerous, extreme lie that insults the memory of the millions of Americans who suffered from the evil of enslavement.” He added, “There was nothing good about slavery; there was nothing good about the Holocaust.”Fox News has not commented on Mr. Gutfeld’s statement.

In his book, Frankl detailed how people can cope with suffering and find meaning in the most horrific of circumstances. Fox News has faced criticism in recent years for giving air to extreme rhetoric. Fox News debuted its revamped prime time lineup just last week, after inexplicably firing Tucker Carlson earlier this year. The new lineup, featuring a bloc of pro-Trump hosts, features Gutfeld helming the 10 p.m.

The influential Fox News lineup, which debuts Monday night, is made up of Trump mouthpieces — personalities who have willfully spread propaganda and misinformation on behalf of Trump during his years in the White House. With the surprise firing of Tucker Carlson from the 8pm perch this spring, Murdoch had the opportunity to reshape Fox News prime time. Winding back the Republican Party to a previous era may be impossible, even for Murdoch. Even if Youngkin did enter the race, Murdoch surely knows that his odds of dethroning Trump would be slim. Which may explain his decision to go with a prime time lineup that has reliably championed Trump.

June 26 (Reuters) - Fox News said on Monday that network veteran Jesse Watters would be the host of a key prime-time slot left vacant by the exit of top-rated host Tucker Carlson. Watters will move to the 8 p.m. slot, starting July 17, with his opinion program "Jesse Watters Primetime", which was launched last year as a 7 p.m. show, Fox News said. Carlson's talk show, "Tucker Carlson Tonight," was the highest-rated cable news program among the same demographic on the most-watched U.S. cable news network. In the weeks following Carlson's departure, Fox had filled the 8 p.m. slot with "Fox News Tonight," which was hosted by a rotating crew of Fox News personalities. A story headline on Fox News suggested the Progress Pride flag promotes "grooming and pedophilia." Fox News faced fierce backlash this week after it linked a new version of the Pride flag to "grooming and pedophilia," the latest anti-LGBTQ rhetoric from the conservative media giant. "White House flew controversial new transgender flag that promotes grooming and pedophilia, say critics," read a now-deleted Fox News tweet and the headline on a story posted on Wednesday. Fox News is straight up saying the pride flag promotes 'grooming and pedophilia.' Meanwhile, Fox News' parent company used the Progress Pride flag design on its logo last year in a "Corporate Social Responsibility Report."

Perry had lived out the right-wing fantasy of lethal violence in defense of “order.” By their lights, he had done nothing wrong. What we know is that Neely, who was homeless, was erratic and acting hostile toward other passengers. At some point, Penny, a former Marine, placed Neely in the chokehold that killed him. But this has not stopped conservatives from valorizing him in the same way they valorized Rittenhouse and Perry. In listening to conservative fans of Rittenhouse, Perry and Penny, you would never know that there were actual people on the other side of these confrontations.
